What are the differences between DMR radio and analog walkie-talkies? Oct 13, 2022

DMR radio is one of the many types of walkie-talkies that have been recognized and favored by many users in recent years. What is the difference between DMR radio and analog walkie-talkie? Let's talk about this topic this time.

What is DMR?

DMR stands for Digital Mobile Radio and is an international standard that has been defined for two-way radios. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the DMR standard. The standard was first ratified in 2005 and has subsequently been updated and revised several times, most recently in November 2018.

What is the difference?

1. Processing of voice signal
Traditional analog walkie-talkie: a communication mode that modulates voice, signaling, and signals to the carrier frequency of radio in a continuous wave mode, and optimizes it through amplification.

While DMR radio digitizes the voice signal, uses a specific digital encoding method and a specific baseband modulation form, and adopts a digital signal processor to optimize the data communication mode.

2.Utilization of spectrum resources: DMR radios can make better use of spectrum resources. Similar to cellular digital technology, DMR radios can load more users on a given channel to improve spectrum utilization, which is a solution to frequency congestion.

3. Call quality: DMR radios improve call quality. Because digital communication technology has in-system error correction, compared with analog walkie-talkies, it can achieve better voice audio quality in a wider range of signal environments, and it will receive less audio noise and sound more clear.
