Chinese space station to carry amateur radio equipment Mar 18, 2022

According to IARU news, the China Radio Association Amateur Radio Branch (CRAC) has applied for satellite frequency coordination. The China Space Station Amateur Radio Payload (CSSARC) is proposed by the China Radio Association Amateur Radio Branch (CRAC), the Shanghai Institute of Astronautical Systems Engineering (ASES) and the Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT).

The first phase of the programme payload is planned to provide the following functions using the VHF/UHF amateur radio bands.

1. V/V or U/U voice calls between astronauts and ground stations.
2. V/U or U/V FM repeaters.
3. a V/V or U/U 1k2 AFSK digital repeater.

4. a V/V or U/U SSTV or digital image.

The payload will provide a service to amateur radio enthusiasts worldwide, enabling contact with astronauts or communication between enthusiasts. It will also inspire students to pursue interests in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and encourage more people to take an interest in amateur radio. It is expected to be sent to the Chinese Space Station from the Wenchang Spaceport in the third quarter of 2022.

It is currently in the frequency coordination phase and the exact frequencies are being coordinated, so we will keep an eye on it.
