Can I carry a walkie-talkie to use abroad? Feb 02, 2023

In addition to mobile phones, hams may also want to take a beloved two way radio with them when they travel. So, if it is an outbound travel, can they carry and use the radio?

The answer is clear. If there is no relevant permission from the destination country, it is not allowed to use radio equipment casually. For specific usage issues, please refer to the laws and regulations of each country.

For example, if you want to use a walkie-talkie in Japan, you need to use a radio  with the GITEKI mark. If you use it without the mark, or make a wireless phone without the mark in a usable state, it will violate the Japanese Radio Law. POC radio of Chinese standards, FRS or GMRS of American standards, and UHF channel CB of Australian standards are prohibited in Japan because they may cause signal interference to important radio communications such as disaster prevention.

If domestic wireless equipment is brought to the United States, it must first be filed in the country, and then filed with the local radio administration in the United States, and used within the frequency regulations of amateur radio stations in the United States. Generally speaking, the handheld radio with a call range of 1-2 miles does not need a license, and the one with a range of 5-25 miles needs to obtain a license from the FCC.
