  • Ham Radio Club Revives Alternative Communication
Ham Radio Club Revives Alternative Communication March 09, 2024
The president of Marshall University’s ham radio club said he believes two way radio communication is a great way to bring people together. Jacob Wriston, the president of the Thundering Herd Amateur Radio Club, said his experience with ham radio began in high school. Wriston said the club’s main goal is to promote the hobby of amateur radio. The club’s faculty advisor, professor Tom Cuchta, said his personal experience with amateur radio began during the COVID-19 lockdown. He said he had already had an interest in high quality radios when he learned about amateur radio. “When AT&T coverage went out, people with AT&T coverage were lost,” Wriston said. “They had no way to communicate with people. When you have to rely on infrastructure to get communication, whether it’s Internet, whether it’s cell service, whatever- we’re still able to communicate because when we set an antenna up, when we talk to somebody, we’re not rely-ing on infrastructure–I’m talking straight from me to you with an antennae and with the radio.” Wriston said the club does more than talk over radios; they were deeply involved in the practice emergency event at the campus football stadium last semester and helped provide radio communications for the event. Wriston said he believes that radio communication is an important skill in an age where everyone is trying to demonize each other. “Whether you speak Russian, or you speak Ukrainian or you speak English,” Wriston said, “if you go to church, if you don’t go to church, whatever you do- as long as we’re both on the radio, and then we can communicate with each other, have a good time.” Cuchta said he had recently made contact with a fellow amateur radio hobbyist in Russia. “It’s really cool that I can throw a piece of wire in a tree, and I can make a contact in Russia, which I did last night,” Cuchta said. “It’s this idea that you can make really remote talk with very little equipment which is kind of fascinating.” Cuchta said part of the purpose of ham radio communication is its ability to backup broken infrastructure and build international goodwill.

  • Bellevue Amateur Radio Club inspires Youth in Omaha with ARRL Kids Day
Bellevue Amateur Radio Club inspires Youth in Omaha with ARRL Kids Day January 13, 2024
The Bellevue Amateur Radio Club and the Science Club at Yates Illuminates teamed up to offer the youth in Omaha, Nebraska, with an opportunity to get on the air for ARRL Kids Day. The event occurred at Yates Illuminates, a former elementary school that is now a culture and community center. Amateur radio operators Dudley Allen, Terry Gampper, Frank Jozwiak, and Mike Terneus, served as volunteer operators and were extremely patient coaches who nurtured the kids' curiosities of talking on the radio. Dozens of youths as young as 4, as well as 91year old Bob Hutton, used DMR 2 way radios or kid radio to talk to amateur radio operators across the country and around the world. One parent said, "The event organized by the Yates Illuminates Science Club was a perfect blend of education, technology, and community spirit. My kids were thrilled to delve into the world of amateur radio, thanks to the expert guidance of the Bellevue Amateur Radio Club. They learned about using uhf long distance radio to contact other young radio enthusiasts across the country. This hands-on experience in communication technology was not only fun but also incredibly educational." ARRL Kids Day is already planned for next year, and the Yates Illuminates Science Club will continue to help youth learn the basics of electrical circuits, electronics, and radio propagation, as well as how to make homebrew antennas.

  • State to soon come up with a temporary ham radio station at Mousuni Islands
State to soon come up with a temporary ham radio station at Mousuni Islands November 24, 2023
The state government has set the ball rolling for setting up a temporary amteur radio station at Mousuni Island under Namkhana block in South 24-Parganas considering its vulnerability to frequent cyclonic weather conditions as well as major natural disasters. The district administration with the assistance of ham radio enthusiasts are using a trial and error method for identification of the areas where there is availability of good signal and the area having the best of signal will have such a radio station. The temporary ham radio station will come in handy during such a disaster as the district administration will be able to know what sort of assistance in terms of relief is required for the people there. “We are already getting satisfactory results in this signal aspect and we are hopeful that we will be able to soon identify the most suitable place and set up a temporary station. Once we have done this, we will gradually proceed to set up a permanent one,” Rupam Dutta, Block Disaster Management Officer, Namkhana said. The state Disaster Management department joined hands with the West Bengal Radio Club and Indian Academy of Communication and Disaster Management and hosted a two-day demonstration regarding setting up of radio station, placing of the antenna for proper communication, using digital uhf radio and so on. As many as 45 civil defence volunteers of South and North 24-Parganas district have already received ham radio licences and permanent ham radio stations have already come up in Gangasagar and Gosaba.

  • Amateur Radio Operators Provide Post-Hurricane Communications in Mexico
Amateur Radio Operators Provide Post-Hurricane Communications in Mexico November 06, 2023
Radio Amateurs are providing communication services to and from the affected areas in and around Acapulco, Mexico. On the morning of Wednesday, 165 mile-per-hour winds from Hurricane Otis knocked out all communications and unleashed a nightmare scenario in Acapulco. Amateur radio operators are still active with multiple operations, and they are receiving citizen requests to obtain information on the whereabouts of their relatives. Additionally, hams in the Acapulco area are trying to locate civilians using their own resources, such as choosing the GPS two way radio. Some of these hams are operating their equipment on battery power, while others have access to generators. Accessing many areas in the region has been a challenge due to the amount of debris blocking travel. Galvan also reported that hams have been providing communication between state agencies and their field personnel deployed in the Acapulco area. "At least three state agencies have hams on their teams. We have been communicating their messages to their central coordination via HF repeaters. Requests for specific requirements have been escalated to the support teams. Air medical services have been directed to areas that were not being attended," he said. • A Ham Radio seminar held for Cruising Mexico
A Ham Radio seminar held for Cruising Mexico September 06, 2023
John and I had a book-sales booth at a West Coast boat show, and we were scheduled to give a seminar called Ham Radio for Cruising Mexico. "That morning, a young couple visiting our booth slowly browsed my guidebooks to Mexico and Central America, said that circumnavigating was their dream, and they were in the process of outfitting their boat for just that goal. They bought my books, so I signed them ‘Smooth Seas to Jim and Judy.’ So, I invited them to our ham-radio seminar." Anyone with a SSB radio can “monitor” the different ham nets to hear what’s going on, like rescue and recover work for the Lahaina fires. Ham radio nets are a purely volunteer public service that’s regulated by the FCC, and they’re free listen in. If you’re having any emergency, you can always call in for help even if you’re not a licensed ham. Ham nets are formatted like boaters’ portable VHF nets – but on steroids. Morning Cruisers’ Nets on VHF are a backbone of the cruising community. First-timers in Mexico quickly learn to tune in at 0800 (usually on VHF channel 22) to these English-speaking VHF nets that operate from boats within marinas and anchorages at all Mexico’s cruising ports. VHF is purely “line of sight” communications. After the emergency traffic, ham-net formats sound like any VHF cruisers’ net, shifting to the all-important “weather.” In ham nets, another volunteer disseminates official NOAA forecasts plus several onsite weather reports that he or she has gathered from other boaters underway. Two ham boaters listening to the same net might be thousands of miles apart, in remote or undeveloped corners of the planet – or crossing oceans. VHF nets’ focus is local weather, which gains importance during hurricane season.

  • Amateur Radio Operators Serve in Hawaii Firestorm Relief Efforts
Amateur Radio Operators Serve in Hawaii Firestorm Relief Efforts August 18, 2023
ARRL members, in the Hawaii Amateur Radio Emergency Service, continue to respond following to the deadly wildfires on the island of Maui. The radio amateurs are coordinating with state and local officials during the response and recovery effort. On August 15, an HF SHARES gateway, and an amateur VHF VARA FM gateway were brought back online, after having been damaged. Local hams continue to update lists of frequencies and repeaters that can be used in the response. ARRL Section Manager Jospeh Speroni, who serves the Pacific Section including Hawaii and US territories in the Pacific, sent a message to members across the Section on Wednesday. “The suddenness of the Maui Disaster is shocking. It affects us all,” he said. Speroni said it was difficult to know immediately the status of radio amateurs and equipment on Maui, including repeaters and gateways. “Sadly, there are now confirmed deaths and several of our ham radio receivers have lost their homes.” “Wildfires have affected phones, internet, and cell services across Maui. VERY Limited Cell contact was established with Lahaina or its ham operators due to burned fiber lines and VERY limited hams in the area,” included one of the updates. Hawaii has many amateur radio repeaters and an extensive internet-linked repeater system, including KH6COM, a VHF/UHF Maui countywide system with emergency backup power. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Hawaii and especially the Island of Maui,” said ARRL Director of Emergency Management Josh Johnston, Johnston emphasized that most of amateur radio communications, including any messages being relayed, are being handled on the existing repeater system in the state. On shortwave, HF stations across Hawaii are operating nets on 7.088 MHz.

  • Using the new Ring Two-way radio to help with mobility impairment
Using the new Ring Two-way radio to help with mobility impairment August 09, 2023
When Ring announced the launch of Ring Two-way radio, Rob from Wakefield in the UK was quick to order one, knowing that it could make a big difference to his life. Having developed a mobility impairment in recent years, Rob has days when answering his GMRS walkie-talkie can be a real challenge. Being able to speak to visitors and buzz them into his building using his smartphone would make things a lot more convenient for him, especially when he was away from home. “I have a mobility impairment, so I’m not always able to answer the door,” said Rob. “I bought Ring Two-way radio to be able to answer the door when I’m either not in the house or confined to my bed.” Having installed Ring radio, Rob found that he was immediately able to make use of the Two-Way Talk and Remote Unlock features to speak to visitors and buzz them in using his smartphone. Recently, Rob was having some adaptations made to his flat. During this time he was able to combine the use of his Ring Two-way radio and Video Doorbell - answering his radio to various tradespeople and then seeing them arrive at the door of his flat before letting them in. Day-to-day, he can let delivery drivers into the building and ask them to leave his packages in a safe place without having to get up from his bed. He can then pick up his deliveries when he is feeling more mobile. As his story demonstrates, Ring Two-way radio is ideal for apartment-dwellers who work away from home, frequent travelers, or anyone who wants to make their everyday a little easier.
